STAGE 1 / LESSON 1: WHERE, HERE, THERE

Animals: butterfly, crocodile, elephant, horse, rabbit, snail, snake + other common animals
Adjectives: slow/fast, big/small, scary/pretty/cute
Target Phrases:
"Where is the butterfly?" "Here/there".
"Butterflies are pretty. Crocodiles are scary. Snakes are scary. Elephants are big. Rabbits are cute. Horses are fast. Snails are slow."

 

LESSON PLAN

VOCABULARY

1. Prepare: Attach the crocodile and elephant Song Flashcards to the wall. Keep the butterfly flashcard.
2. Teach the Animal flashcards and Adjective flashcards. 
3. Make a phrase "horses are fast".
4. Match animals and adjectives cards: "snails are slow, snakes are scary".
*In week one, you may want to limit the number of new words to four animals and four adjectives.

SONG

1. Make sure the elephant and crocodile cards are on the wall, and put the butterfly card next to the students.
2. Ask students "Where is the crocodile?"
3. Students point and say "there".
4. Repeat for the elephant.
5. Ask students "Where is the butterfly?" 
6. Students touch the card and say "here".
7. For more practice, use the items in the room: window, floor, wall, door; "Where is the door?" "There."

LESSON WORKSHEETS

ACTIVITY

GAME for age 4-6 years
1. Place several copies of the Adjective Flashcards on the floor or a table, picture side down.
2. Give each student an Animal Flashcard and ask them to search for the matching adjective.
3. Students give the pair of cards to teacher and say the English "elephants are big".

GAME for age 6+ years
1. Place 6 Animal Flashcards and the 6 Adjective Flashcards in two rows.
2. A student (or team) rolls the dice to choose an animal (e.g. elephant). Roll the dice again to choose an adjective (e.g. small).
3. If the cards match, the students make the phrase e.g. "Elephants are big" and get one point. If the cards don't match, the teacher can ask "Are elephants small?" The students answer "no" and get 0 points.
