STAGE 1 / LESSON 3: HOW'S THE WEATHER?
LESSON PLAN
LANGUAGE
1. Show the Weather Flashcards. Elicit the vocabulary. Ask “how’s the weather” and students can respond (“it’s sunny”). You can also elicit “hot / I’m hot” and “cold / I’m cold” with the sunny and snowing cards.
2. Ask students “do you like (rainy) weather?” Students can respond with yes or no. Repeat with a few of the cards.
SONG
1. Show the rainy flashcard (Weather flashcards). Ask students “how’s the weather?” “It’s raining.”
2. Show the family flashcard. Elicit family member names: “Who’s this?” “Daddy”.
Do this for every family member.
3. Use your fingers to review family member words. Ask students “who is this?” and put up Daddy finger. Students answer “Daddy/ this is my Daddy”. Repeat for the other fingers (mummy finger, brother finger, sister finger, baby finger).
4. Teach the phrase “rain rain go away” using the song gestures (see song lyrics).
5. Sing the song, using the correct finger for each family member. Put up all your fingers for “family”.
LESSON WORKSHEETS

ACTIVITY
Review the Feelings Game from Lesson 8, but include the "hot (sunny)" and "cold (snowing)" feelings:
Prepare a selection of flashcards used in this lesson. Show the cards and check the vocabulary. Place the cards into a pack, face down.
1. The teacher takes one card and doesn’t show the other students.
2. Students take turns guessing which card the teacher has:
“Are you happy?” “No I’m not”
“Are you sleepy?” “Yes I am!”
Students can also take turns to select a card and answer the questions.
For more language practice, select one card, and place the other cards in front of the students one by one, saying “I’m not happy, I’m not sleepy, I’m not sad, I’m not hot, what am I?” Students answer “Are you angry?” “Yes I am!”
PUPPET ACTIVITY
You can also try these questions with a puppet.
1. Students ask the puppet "how are you?"
Puppet replies with an animal sound so students can't understand (e.g. woof woof or caw caw).
2. Teacher gives each student a feeling card. Students take turns asking the puppet "Are you (hot)?" "Are you (sleepy)?" The puppet can nod for yes, or shake its head for no.
3. Put the yes cards in one pile, and the no cards in another. When the students have finished, check the yes pile: "Oh the puppet is (sleepy) and (hungry)."
4. If possible, take action to help the puppet, e.g. give food, or fan it (hot), put on a blanket (cold) etc.
Practice the lesson language with these worksheets.
