STAGE 0 / LESSON 1: I'M HUNGRY

Vocabulary: Food and Drink words

Phrases: I'm hungry/thirsty. Can I have (an apple)? Here you go!

LESSON PLAN

SONG: I'm Hungry

1. Show the ‘I’m hungry’ flashcard from the Feelings Flashcards. Elicit “apple” and “hungry/I’m hungry” while patting your tummy.
2. Show the other food flashcards and teach the words.
3. Sing the song with gestures, showing the food flashcards in order. Mime eating the food and saying “tasty” or "yummy".  (There are two versions of the song, for variety).

SONG: I'm Thirsty

Use this version of the song in week 3 or 4 as an alternative.

1. Show the ‘I’m thirsty’ flashcard from the Feelings Flashcards. Elicit “water” and "I’m thirsty” while miming drinking from a cup.
2. Show the other drink flashcards and teach the words.
3. Sing the song with gestures, showing the drink flashcards in order. Mime drinking the drinks and say "yummy" or "tasty".  (There are two versions of the song, for variety).

LESSON WORKSHEETS

ACTIVITY: Puppet

Prepare: Stick food or drink flashcards on the wall around the room.

1. Students ask the puppet “how are you?” The puppet responds “I’m hungry/thirsty. Can I have (a banana)?”.
2. Students touch the correct flashcard and give it to the puppet, saying “here you go”. (A crocodile puppet or one with a big mouth is fun for this lesson). Repeat for the other food pictures.
3. Finally, for fun, you may say “Can I have a (foot)?” Students have to give their body part to the puppet (hand, knee, tummy, foot).

Optional - make the food. Lay out coloured paper in some basic colours and preteach (eg red and green). Have students scrunch it into balls. The puppet asks “Can I have a red ball?” Students must choose the correct colour to give. If the students give the wrong colour, you can have fun spitting it out!
